Three Civil Air Patrol cadets and two senior members from the Raleigh-Wake Composite Squadron responded to the call for support from the North Carolina Emergency Operations Center (EOC) early on the morning of Tuesday, February 17, 2105, to support North Carolina’s emergency responders following the severe winter storm that brought ice and snow to a large portion of the state.
In response to Governor McCrory declaring a state of emergency in North Carolina, the EOC and State Emergency Response Team (SERT) was activated. C/ 2Lt Sam Smith, C/CMSgt Max Matthews and C/ CMSgt Will Smith, along with Capt. Vlack and Lt. Col. Langley from Raleigh-Wake Composite Squadron assisted with administrative duties, served as messengers and support staff for all branches of the EOC. They gained first-hand experience and were present to see regular press briefings by the Governor and others.
Brian Falconer, Assistant Director, Logistics for North Carolina Emergency Management, said “I want to personally thank [the CAP senior members] and the CAP Cadets that assisted the [SERT] during the recent winter weather event. We are very thankful to have your team located with us and your willingness to step up and assist whenever asked. [The] team’s professionalism and dedication to our mission is as always, greatly appreciated.”
The Raleigh Wake Composite Squadron meets weekly on Tuesday from 6:30-9 PM at the North Carolina National Guard Joint Forces Headquarters at 4105 Reedy Creek Road, Raleigh, NC 27607. If you are interested in learning more about Civil Air Patrol, contact CAP at: jlangley@mer.cap.gov.
