Winston-Salem Color Guard Steps in at Last Minute at Baseball Game

Performs outstandingly before July 4th record-breaking crowd

7/8/2017–WINSTON-SALEM, NC–What started out as an ordinary volunteer outing for NC-082 (plus one cadet from NC-307) turned into an incredible evening performing before a record-breaking crowd.  

NC-082 does Color Guard on scheduled dates for the Winston-Salem Dash, a minor league baseball team. They also help out with other volunteer tasks at the games as well. On July 4th, the squadron was scheduled to just do volunteer work and planned to stay for the game and the fireworks show afterwards. But a mere two hours before the game, they were put on stand-by to possibly do Color Guard at the game!  
 
It was a surprise but the Winston-Salem squadron was up to the task. As they arrived at the stadium, they were officially tasked with the Color Guard assignment. (Another service branch's color guard was unable to perform at the last minute.)
 
The NC-082 Color Guard rose to the occasion and pulled the team together just before the game began. The Color Guard had two seasoned riflemen (NC-082’s C/Capt Cody Matthews and C/TSgt Quinn Miller) as well as an experienced flagbearer (C/TSgt Alexandra Mallison.) New to the exercise were flagbearers C/Amn Nicholas Hoeben and C/Amn Kendall Cromer of NC-082 and C/Amn William Tucker of NC-307.
 
When the big moment came, the CAP Color Guard stepped bravely onto the field and performed excellently. The July 4th celebration was saved.  
 
After the game was over, it was announced that the audience had broken a stadium record: 9,007 people were in attendance for the game. NC-082’s Color Guard, rookies included, had performed before a record-breaking crowd. Once again Civil Air Patrol came through when needed.
